You may receive more than one bill after your clinic visit. Here’s why:

  • Children’s Wisconsin will send you a bill for things like clinic staff, medical supplies and some procedures or tests.
  • If your child sees a specialist, you may also get a separate bill for tests or procedures done during that visit.
  • The Medical College of Wisconsin will send a separate bill for the doctor or care provider who saw your child.
  • If your child had X-rays or other radiology services, you may get another bill from Pediatric Radiologic Services.

We will send your bill to your insurance company and give them 30 days to pay. If they don’t pay within that time, you may be responsible for the payment. You’ll get monthly updates about your bill.

Please remember: Paying the bill is your responsibility, even if you have insurance.

Insurance plans are different, so we suggest checking with your insurance company or employer before your child’s visit. Some things to ask about:

  • Do I need a referral or pre-authorization?
  • Will the visit be billed as a hospital or clinic service?
    • Children’s Wisconsin is an outpatient hospital clinic. That means your insurance might count it as a hospital visit, not a regular office visit. This can impact what you pay.

There are many types of health insurance plans and they don’t all cover the same services. What your plan pays for — and what you have to pay — can be very different depending on the plan. It’s important to check with your insurance company before getting care (unless it’s an emergency).

Some services may not be covered or may only be partly covered by your insurance.

Examples include:

  • Elective procedures, like those done for cosmetic reasons
  • Genetic testing or other new types of care
  • Dental services, such as getting a new retainer
  • Hearing aids
  • Speech therapy
  • Contact lenses

Other reasons your insurance might not pay for a service:

  • You haven’t met your deductible yet (the amount you pay before insurance starts to cover costs)
  • You’ve already reached your maximum benefit for the year
  • Children’s Wisconsin is not in your insurance network (some plans don’t include our hospital or clinics)

To avoid surprises, always check with your insurance company before your child’s appointment when possible.

We’ll do our best to check if your insurance plan covers the services your child needs. We also try to get authorization (permission) from your insurance company before providing care.

What you owe depends on your insurance benefits, including:

  • Copay: A set amount you pay for a service
  • Coinsurance: A percentage of the cost you pay
  • Deductible: The amount you must pay before insurance helps
  • Out-of-pocket maximum: The most you have to pay in a year

You should read your insurance plan or call your insurance company to learn if services are covered and what your out-of-pocket costs might be.

If insurance doesn’t cover the full cost, you are responsible for paying the rest. If insurance does not cover the service at all, you must pay the full amount. In some cases, you may need to pay before the service is provided.

Medicaid

  • Please bring your current Medicaid card to every appointment.
  • Be ready to pay your copay, if one is required.
