Tonsillitis is an infection of the tonsils. If your child gets tonsil infections often, doctors may recommend having them removed. Often means three times a year for three years, five times a year for two years, or seven times in one year.
Doctors may also remove the tonsils/adenoids for other reasons. These include:
- Snoring or sleep apnea due to large tonsils/adenoids
- Tonsil stones that cause bad breath or throat pain
- Past infections or abscesses near the tonsils
- Trouble swallowing because tonsils are too big
- Fevers that happen again and again
If your child has any of these problems, the doctor may send you to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) specialist.
