A voice disorder can be due to some of the following:
- Voice problems (voice abnormalities): These are problems with how the voice sounds.
- Vocal cord nodules or polyps: These small bumps can grow on the vocal cords from using your voice too much.
- Vocal cord paresis or paralysis: One or both vocal cords are weak (paresis) or cannot move at all (paralysis).
- Paradoxical vocal fold motion (PVFM) or vocal cord dysfunction (VCD): Vocal cords close when they should open, usually when breathing.
- Overuse: People who use their voice a lot — like singers, actors or teachers — need special care to keep their voice healthy.
- Hoarseness: Your voice sounds rough, breathy or different than normal.
