Our Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) serves as the home for our Pediatric Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) and Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Program. Since 2006, about 25% of our heart transplant patients were supported by a VAD or ECMO as they waited for transplant. These machines allow us to support our most critical patients. They’re able to feel better and enjoy a more routine lifestyle while waiting for a heart.
A VAD is a type of pump that can be surgically implanted to help a failing heart in pump blood to the body. Our team successfully uses many types of devices to help patients get stronger while waiting for heart transplant or for their own hearts to recover. Our experience and expertise with available technologies allows the team to select the best type of support for your child.
