If your child has a high white blood cell count that doesn’t go away or comes with complex symptoms, they may need additional care. Your care team may refer them to the KIDDs Program. We evaluate and care for kids with rare, hard-to-diagnose immune conditions.
Many of these disorders affect more than one part of the body. Our goal is to figure out what’s causing your child’s symptoms and help your family get clear answers.
A Full-Day, Team-Based Evaluation
At the KIDDs clinic, your child will see several experts during a single visit. We’ll create a care team for your child based on their symptoms and potential diagnosis.
The care team may include experts in:
- The immune system (immunologist)
- Blood disorders (hematologist)
- Inflammatory conditions (rheumatologist)
- Infectious diseases
- Digestive issues (gastroenterologist)
- Bone marrow transplant and cellular therapy
- Dermatology
- Pulmonology
We bring the team to you — so you don’t have to travel back and forth between visits.
Tailored Testing and Review
We use advanced tools to get the best possible picture of your child’s immune system.
This includes:
- A full physical exam
- Blood tests to look at different types of white blood cells
- Genetic testing, if needed, to diagnose
- A thorough review of past medical records and test results
- Imaging, biopsies or other tests as needed
Our entire team reviews all of the test results. We put together the pieces and make sense of your child’s health story.
A Clear Plan, Built Around Your Child
Once we better understand what’s causing the high white blood cell count, we’ll work with you to create a plan tailored to your child’s needs. That plan may include medicines, follow-up tests or referrals. In some cases, we may find a diagnosis that opens the door to curative treatment.
You’ll leave the visit with the following:
- A summary of what we learned
- A tailored care plan
- A plan for follow-up care with your home provider
We know this process can feel overwhelming. Our team is here to support you, answer your questions and make sure your child gets the best care possible. We’re here for your family, from diagnosis to long-term health.
