When your child has cancer surgery at Children's Wisconsin, you can expect the best, most advanced care. We're there for your family from the first visit to talk about surgery options for as long as your child needs follow-up care.
Rapid Response Cancer Care
We offer a rapid response complex oncology care team for children with complex tumors. This team works quickly and sometimes aggressively to treat certain cancers without wasting any time.
If doctors suspect or diagnose a certain type of cancer in your child, our rapid response team creates a care plan within 24 hours.
The rapid response team is on call for:
- Stage 3 and 4 Neuroblastoma
- Liver tumors
- Large retroperitoneal tumors
- Any tumor that may need rapid review and immediate care
Our team includes cancer doctors and surgeons who are available at all times and consult with experts in cancer surgery and care. They meet in the imaging department with the on-call radiologist. The team reviews your child's images and tailors a care plan to your child. They start care as soon as possible.
Before Your Child's Surgery
Each surgery is different based on the diagnosis and child, so your care team will talk to you about your unique surgery process. You'll meet with the surgeon and discuss what to expect during and after surgery.
A nurse will call you one to three days before your child's surgery. The nurse will review your child's health history, final details and any changes. They'll let you know when to arrive, when to stop eating and drinking, how to wash to prepare and what to bring.
It's key to talk with your child about what to expect well in advance of surgery day. Our team is here to help your child through anxiety and answer any questions you or your child has. Bringing some select items from home can also make a big difference for your child.
Please bring:
- Special toy or blanket
- Sippy cup or bottle used at home (please give to the nurse in pre-op)
- Extra clothes for both you and your child
Day of Surgery
A Day Surgery team member will show you and your child to your pre-op room. We only allow two parents in the pre-op areas. No one under the age of 18. They'll give your child a pill to help them relax before going into the operating room.
During Surgery
In the operating room, we prepare your child for surgery and give them anesthesia. They can hold a teddy bear or other comfort item. Our staff members will talk and even sing to your child as they fall asleep. While they're doing surgery, a staff member will keep you updated.
Recovery Right After Surgery
After the surgery, your child will go to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit, where they will wake up. You'll see your child as soon as they are awake and doing well. After recovering, the care team will move your child to the day surgery room, inpatient room or the intensive care unit.
In the Hospital
Your child may need to stay in the hospital after cancer surgery. You'll meet daily with our medical teams to make sure everything is going well and that you and your family are comfortable.
Our expert team of nurses will check in throughout the day to ensure you feel comfortable and well cared for. Our team is here to help your child through any side effects they may feel after surgery.
Our entire staff works to create a welcoming, peaceful place for you and your family. Amenities at the MACC Fund Center include:
- A comfortable family lounge
- A fully stocked kitchen
- Laundry facilities
- A young child's playroom
