Chiari Malformation
A Chiari malformation is a congenital (present at birth) defect. It affects the back of the head where the brain and spinal cord connect. Symptoms may include:
Craniosynostosis
Craniosynostosis is a condition in which the skull bones (called sutures) close too early. This causes problems with normal brain and skull growth. Premature closure of the sutures may also cause the pressure inside of the head to increase and the skull or facial bones to change shape.
In infants with this condition, changes in the shape of the head and face may be noticeable. The appearance of one side of the child's face may not be the same as the other.
Hydrocephalus
Hydrocephalus is a condition in which there is a lack of absorption, blockage of flow or overproduction of the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF). This fluid is found inside the ventricles (fluid-filled areas) of the brain. This may result in a buildup of fluid that can cause the pressure inside of the head to increase and the skull bones to expand to a larger-than-normal appearance.
