Antimicrobials are essential to effectively treat infections, however up to 50% of antimicrobial use is reported to be unnecessary or inappropriate, according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Antimicrobial stewardship teams work to optimize the way antimicrobials are prescribed and used with the goal to improve patient outcomes and protect patients from harms, including adverse events and subsequent development of resistant infections.
Antimicrobial stewardship is a multidisciplinary effort to provide every patient with the:
