Hemoglobin A1C Test
Print:
What Is the A1c Test?
- The A1c is a simple blood test that gives a 3-month average of your child’s blood sugar levels.
- It measures the amount of glucose that sticks to a protein called hemoglobin

What Does the Result Mean?
- A1c is shown as a percent (%).
- Most people without diabetes have an A1c of 6% or lower.
- For people with diabetes, we aim for an A1c of 7% or lower.
- This helps lower the risk of complications now.
- This helps lower the risk of diabetes-related health problems later.
- If your child’s A1c number is too high, the team will change the treatment plan to help get your child’s blood sugar down to a lower level.
How Does My A1c Compare to My Blood Sugars?
The table below shows how your A1c level compares to what your blood sugars have been over the past 3 months.
