Getting Ready for Your Child’s Pre-Op Phone Call
Your child’s surgery or procedure is coming up soon. A nurse will call you and share important info with you. Be ready to take notes. Learn more about what will be talked about during the pre-op phone call.

Your child’s surgery or procedure is coming up soon. A nurse will call you 1 to 3 days before the scheduled surgery or procedure.
The Nurse Will Share Important Info With You. Be Ready To Take Notes When We Call. The Nurse Will Answer Your Questions and Review:
- What time the surgery or procedure is scheduled for.
- What time to arrive.
- Where to go on the day of the surgery or procedure.
- The exact time your child needs to stop getting liquids and food. The surgery may be cancelled if this is not followed. Your child is at risk of getting food or liquids into their lungs if they eat or drink after these times.
- Your child’s health history.
- Medicines your child is taking every day or as needed. If your child is on aspirin or blood thinners, please reach out to the surgeon’s office. Ask them if your child needs to stop this medicine before their surgery or procedure.
- Who can visit. Only 2 adult visitors can be at the surgery or procedure. No visitors under the age of 18 years are allowed.
- What to expect on the day of the surgery or procedure.
After the pre-op phone call, the details will be shared in your child's MyChart. It is found under the Main Menu, under the Letters tab. To set up MyChart for your child, go to mychart.childrenswi.org or call 414-250-7045.
If your child gets sick before this phone call, call your surgeon’s office.
If your child gets sick after this phone call, call the pre-op call center. Choose the location where your child’s surgery is scheduled:
