Trach Cap

What is a trach cap?

A trach (tracheostomy) cap covers the opening of a trach tube.  It blocks air from entering the tube.  When it is in place, all breathing in and out will be through the nose and mouth.  1483 - Trach cap

Why is a trach cap used?

The trach cap is not always needed.  When in use, it:

  • Helps with speech, eating and dealing with mucous.
  • Helps a child swallow.  This can help limit how much a child chokes.
  • Improves smell and taste.
  • Lets the nose and mouth filter and humidify the air.
  • Gets the child ready for having their trach tube removed.

What should I know about a trach cap?

  • Use a slight twist when putting on the cap.  This helps to keep it in place.
  • If your child uses oxygen, oxygen must be given through a nasal cannula. You will get one from your team.
  • Before giving any breathing treatments, remove the cap.

Special directions

  • Always have someone with your child while they are using the cap.
  • Do not use the cap when your child is sleeping.
  • If your child has problems breathing while using the cap, take it off.  If your child keeps having problems while using the cap, call your doctor.
  • Get rid of mucous in the cap by rinsing the cap under warm water.

How do I clean the trach cap?

Wash the trach cap every day.  Use the same cap until it breaks.

  1. Swish the cap around in warm, soapy water. The best soap to use is a baby bath soap.  It is best not to use Palmolive soap.  It leaves a film.
  2. Rinse with warm water.
  3. Put on a clean surface to air dry.
