Why Does My Child Need a Urine Test?

Your child’s doctor has asked for this test. It will help them treat your child. You can get a urine (pee) sample from your child at home.  Then, bring it to one of the Children’s Wisconsin drop-off locations.

What Supplies Do I Need?

You will get a collection kit that has:

  • Urine collection bag (U-Bag)
  • Sterile container with twist top
  • 3 soap towelettes (wipes)
  • Disposable gloves
  • Biohazard specimen bag

What Do I Need To Do To Get the Urine Sample?

Clean your baby’s skin

  1. Make sure your baby’s bottom is clean. The urine sample must not have any poop.
  2. Wash your hands with soap and water.  This keeps your bacteria from getting into the urine.  If that happens, the test results will not be right.
  3. Put the gloves on your hands.
  4. Open the 3 wipes. Use each wipe one time only.
  5. Use one wipe at a time to clean your child’s penis. Start at the tip of the penis.  If your child has a foreskin, pull it back gently before cleaning.  In young children, you may not be able to pull the foreskin back.
  6. Make circles with the wipe as you clean from the tip to the bottom of the penis.  Throw the wipe away.
  7. Use the second wipe and clean the penis again. Start at the tip and clean down to the bottom of the penis. Throw the wipe away.
  8. Use the third wipe to clean the penis from tip to bottom again.  Throw the wipe away.

Put on the urine collection bag (U-Bag)

  1. Take the U-Bag out of the pouch. Unfold the U-Bag to see the oval opening with the white tabs around it. The bottom of the U-Bag is the longer side.  This is where the urine will collect. There may be a blue tab at the bottom of the U-Bag. Do not remove this.
  2. Carefully peel off the white tabs.  These will be used to stick the U-Bag to your child’s skin.
  3. Put the top of the U-Bag above the penis and scrotum.  Make sure the penis and scrotum both go inside of the bag.
  4. Attach the bottom of the bag under your child’s scrotum.
Note: Do not put the U-Bag around the baby’s anus.  This will cause poop to get into the bag.  Then the urine sample cannot be used.
  5. Make sure that these tabs are secure and stuck to your child’s skin on all sides.  This will keep help prevent leaking.
  6. Put the U-Bag so it hangs outside of the diaper. Then put the diaper on. This will let you see when enough urine is in the bag.
Tip: You could cut a hole in the diaper to pull the bag out to see when there is urine.

Remove the U-bag and put urine in container.
When enough urine is in the U-bag, carefully remove it from your child.

  • Fold the sticky tabs securely together and place the entire U-Bag in the sterile container.
    or
  • Hold the bag over the sterile container. Carefully remove the blue tab at the bottom of the U-Bag.  Let the urine to run into the cup. Twist the lid on tightly to stop spills.

Label the Specimen
Write this information on the container:

  1. Your child’s first and last name
  2. Your child’s date of birth
  3. Time of collection
  4. Date of collection

All of this information must be on the container.  If it is not, Children’s Wisconsin will not be able to do the urine test.

Bring the container to a Children’s Wisconsin testing site within 12 hours of collection.  Store the urine sample in the refrigerator (unless your provider told you something else) until you bring it back.
