Physical and occupational therapy Taping instruction sheet (1363)

Key points below

 Why is taping done?

To help hold a joint in position so a long muscle has time to shorten.
To help you be more aware of a muscle or joint during therapy. This helps strengthen a muscle.
To help relax an overused muscle to make it easier to use other muscles.

What kind of tape is used?

Kinesio Tex® Gold tape. This is a woven tape that stretches.  Underwrap does not need to be used because Kinesio Tex® can be applied right onto the skin.  This tape is latex-free and designed for sensitive skin.
Rigid Tape. This kind of tape does not stretch. An underwrap called Hypafix® or Cover-roll® is normally used under the tape to protect the skin. It can be used without underwrap on hands and feet.  Milk of Magnesia is often used on the skin to protect it before using this tape, especially on the back.  This tape has latex.

How is the tape worn?

This tape is a test patch.  Leave it on for 48 hours, and then take it off.  Remove it right away if you start to see swelling, it itches or you see redness around the tape.
This tape is part of your therapy.  Your therapist will let you know how long to leave the tape on.  Remove it right away if you start to see swelling, it itches or you see redness around the tape.
Remove tape 24 hours before coming to therapy. You will be taped again at therapy.
Once the tape has been on for at least 20 minutes, it can get wet. You can take a bath or swim with the tape on. Pat it dry with a towel. Do not rub blow dry with a hairdryer.  Heating the tape will make it hard to remove. Do not wear the tape in direct sunlight for long periods of time
If tape starts to roll on the edges, trim the edges so that it won’t get caught on clothes.
The tape will stay on for 3 to 5 days

How do I remove the tape?

Put a thin layer of skin-safe oil, (like baby oil or olive oil) over the entire area of tape.  Let it soak in for 15 to 20 minutes.
To start, loosen one end of the tape.  Hold your skin as you move the tape away.
Remove the tape slowly.
After removing, use plenty of lotion on the skin for moisture. This will also help with any irritation.  Do not put lotion on right before a therapy visit.
