What is a self-swab collection?

Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Trichomoniasis are infections. A vaginal swab is the preferred way to test for these infections. Many patients would rather collect their own sample. This is done with a self-swab collection kit. If you do not want to, or are not able to get your own sample, your provider can get the sample for you.

How is it done? 

1. Open the kit packet. Throw away the transfer pipette.
2. Remove the swab from the wrapper with your clean hands. Hold the swab with the white tip up. Do not touch the tip of the swab to anything.
3. Holding the swab with one hand, gently spread the vaginal labia with your other hand.  Insert the white tip of the swab about 2 inches into your vagina.  About ½ of the swab will be inside of the vagina. Make 5 slow circles touching all the way around the inside of the vagina. This should take 30 seconds. Remove the swab. Do not let the swab touch anything else.
4. Throw the extra piece of the stick and the wrapper away.
5. Put the swab in the tube with the white tip down. If the tube spills or liquid splashes out, you will need to request a new Specimen Collection Kit.
6. Break off the top part of the swab along the score line. The score line is made to break easily. Screw the cap back onto the tube tightly.
7 Throw the extra piece of the stick and the wrapper away.

8. Wash your hands.

9. Give the tube to the nurse.
