Children with airway and digestive disorders need expert, team-based care. At Children’s Wisconsin, we bring together specialists from across our system. We evaluate and treat even the most complex conditions.
Our Aerodigestive and Foregut Center and the Voice Program offer care in one location, often during one visit. This reduces the number of visits your child needs and helps us create a full picture of your child’s health.
Our team includes:
- Ear, nose and throat doctors
- Digestive care doctors
- Lung doctors
- Surgeons
- Speech and language pathologists
- Dietitians
- Laryngologists (for voice and breathing issues)
Your First Visit
During your first visit, we’ll take a full medical history and review any records you bring. Your child will have a physical exam. We may order tests to check how their airway, swallowing tube (esophagus) or stomach works.
Tests may include:
- Laryngoscopy or bronchoscopy: Looks inside the nose, throat, voice box, windpipe and lungs. It lets us check for blockages, swelling or abnormal movement
- Esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD): Uses a small camera to look inside the esophagus, stomach and upper small intestine. Can find irritation, narrowing or injury
- Esophageal manometry: Measures how well the esophagus moves food to the stomach
- pH-impedance probe: Checks for acid reflux or non-acid reflux. These can cause symptoms like coughing, hoarseness or pain
- EndoFLIP: A study of the shape and movement of the esophagus during swallowing
- Fiber optic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES): Uses a small camera to watch how your child swallows. We can see if food or drink goes down the wrong way
- Video fluoroscopy swallow study: A type of X-ray that shows how your child swallows different textures and liquids
When possible, we combine tests like laryngoscopy, bronchoscopy and EGD into one session called a triple scope. This helps limit how many times your child needs sedation.
After testing, our team meets to talk through the results and make a plan. We’ll explain what we find and discuss your options before you leave.
During Treatment
Once we confirm a diagnosis, we’ll guide your family through each step of care. Some kids need medicine, others need surgery and many need a mix of both.
You’ll see the same core team throughout your child’s care. We may adjust the care plan if your child’s symptoms change or if they need more testing. You’ll also have access to experts in nutrition, voice therapy and behavioral support.
After Care
Some kids with airway and breathing disorders improve quickly. Others need long-term care. We’ll continue to check in and adjust their plan to make sure your child is breathing, eating and growing safely.
Our goal is to make your child’s quality of life better and lower the risk of infections or hospital stays. We know that complex medical needs can be overwhelming. We’re here to support you and your child, every step of the way.
