Our team will talk with you about the potential risks and benefits of doing genetic testing and what testing options are available. We typically do a germline genetic test using a blood or saliva sample. For a somatic genetic test, we’ll usually use a tissue sample from the latest biopsy or surgery. In some cases, we may need to perform a new biopsy.

Once test results are available, they will help you understand your child’s long-term risk of developing cancer. They’ll work with you to create a plan for ongoing monitoring, testing and care.

Genetic testing looks for changes in genes. Genes are instructions that tell the body how to grow and work. Some genetic changes are present from birth. Others develop only inside cancer or tumor cells.

Genetic testing can help us:

• Learn if a child has an inherited cancer risk
• Better understand a cancer diagnosis
• Find treatment options that may work best
• Identify risks for other family members
• Create a long-term plan for care and monitoring

The process is simple and family centered.

1. Meet with a genetic counselor: We review your child's health history and family history.
2. Discuss testing options: Our team explains the benefits of testing, possible results and limitations of testing
3. Collect a sample: Many tests use either a blood or saliva sample.
4. Laboratory testing: A specialized laboratory analyzes the sample.
5. Review results: Our team explains your child's results using easy-to-understand language.
6. Create a care plan: If needed, we develop a monitoring and follow-up plan for your child and family.

There are several possible results.

• Positive Result: A gene change was found that may increase cancer risk.
• Negative Result: No known cancer-related gene changes were identified.
• Uncertain Result: Sometimes testing finds a gene change that researchers do not fully understand yet.
