Dance Medicine
A collaboration between multiple specialties at Children’s Wisconsin to provide top care for dancers
What Is Dance Medicine?
What To Know About Dance Medicine
The demands on a dancer’s body are different than those of other athletes and can lead to distinct injuries that require specialized care. Dance Medicine care at Children’s Wisconsin is a multi-disciplinary clinic within the Sports Medicine Program. Our experienced sports medicine physicians, licensed athletic trainers, sports physical therapists, sport and orthopedic psychologist and sports nutritionist focus on providing the most comprehensive care to the young dancer.
What To Expect From a Dance Medicine Visit
At the initial visit, your dance will be evaluated by our clinical medical team. Your child's evaluation begins with a comprehensive history and medical exam with a licensed athletic trainer and a sports medicine provider. The team will gather information about your child's style(s) of dance, dance shoe wear, training volume, competition schedule, injury history and current medical concerns. Depending on the current injury, imaging may be ordered. We will educate you and your child on the best treatment plan based on their diagnosis.
Subsequent visits will take place with one of our physical therapists who specialize in working with dancers. Your child's physical therapist will assess their flexibility, strength, balance and movement patterns. The physical therapist will then prescribe a treatment program tailored to your child to facilitate their return to dance. Physical therapy goals include addressing movement and muscular factors that contribute to injury and teaching injury prevention strategies.
We coordinate visits with our sports physical therapy, sport psychology and sports nutrition teams when needed to address the mental and nutritional aspects of recovery to optimize dance performance. There will also be follow up visits as required with our clinical sports medicine providers as needed. Our entire team of specialist communicate regularly to ensure that we are all on the same page working to help your dancer through their treatment.
