Postgraduate year two (PGY-2)

The PGY-2 pediatric pharmacy residency program at Children's Wisconsin is a 12-month, ASHP-accredited program. Our residency provides valuable training in the various aspects of pharmacotherapy and pediatrics through a customizable program comprised of four to six week rotations. The mission of the post-graduate year two residency program at Children's Wisconsin is to train competent and independent practitioners of advanced pediatric pharmacy in an academic, free-standing, pediatric health-system setting. The second year residency program builds upon general pediatric knowledge in managing care of the medically complex pediatric patient, medication use systems specific to pediatric pharmaceutical care in critical care and acute care areas, and supports optimal medication therapy outcomes for complex patients with a broad range of pediatric disease states and achieves this through research, education, multi-disciplinary teamwork, and leadership. The PGY-2 program allows the resident to subspecialize within pediatric pharmacy practice in the following areas: cardiac intensive care, medical/surgical/trauma intensive care, neonatal intensive care, and oncology/bone marrow transplant.

  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU + CICU) (12 weeks)
  • Hematology, oncology and bone marrow transplant (4-6 weeks)
  • Emergency department & trauma center (4 weeks)

    • Present at least #2, 45 minute presentations to pharmacy staff

    • Present a minimum of 2 journal club articles to pharmacist staff

All residents are required to obtain Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification in the fall.

Residency requirements

To be eligible for the PGY-2 pharmacy residency program at Children's Wisconsin, applicants must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Graduated from an ACPE accredited degree program (or from a program that's in the process of pursuing accreditation)
  • Doctor of pharmacy (PharmD) degree
  • Completed an ASHP accredited PGY-1 pharmacy residency
  • Must obtain pharmacy licensure in the state of Wisconsin by September 1st

Staffing requirements

  • Residents are required to staff every third weekend as well as approximately two weekday or evenings per month (50-60 staffing days per year)
    • Staffing locations will include:
      • Central pharmacy
      • Total parenteral nutrition service
      • Decentralized teams which will provide the resident with the opportunity to attend multidisciplinary rounds (general pediatrics)
      • Based on interest and competency in specialty areas, residents may staff in specialized rotations if approved by primary preceptor (NICU, PICU, HOT)
  • Each resident will staff 1 major and 1 minor holiday (Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Eve/Day, New Year's Eve/Day, and Memorial Day). Holiday coverage is decided among the residents.
