Learn more about the updated referral process for autism

To improve access and align with American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommendations, Children’s Wisconsin and the Center for Child Development announces that a child under the age of 30 months being referred for an autism evaluation now requires a PCP referral along with documentation of developmental screenings.  This guideline helps us ensure that kids are being seen at the right place and will increase our efficiency so that we can accommodate more patients and reduce wait times.

The Primary Care Provider (PCP) and patient/family will gather the following screenings to help understand the child’s needs better:

  • A formal hearing test
  • A routine vision check
  • Complete a developmental ASQ screening (Ages and Stages Questionnaire)
  • PCP will screen for autism using the MCHAT-R (Modified Checklist for Autism in Toddlers, Revised) and follow-up interview
  • Refer to your county’s Birth-to-3 program
  • Completed lead screening
