Get to know Matthew Cooper, MD from Solid Organ Transplantation

cooperMatthew Cooper, MD, joined Children’s Wisconsin in February 2023 as the Director of Solid Organ Transplantation and Chief of the Division of Transplantation in the Department of Surgery, Professor of Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the Mark B. Adams Chair in Transplant Surgery. 

Dr. Coopers’ clinical interests include kidney and pancreas transplantation in both children and adults, particularly the use of marginal organs. He seeks new opportunities for living donation through innovation and by removing the disincentives for those considering donation while promoting the safety and long-term care of live organ donors.
In addition to his clinical experience, Dr. Cooper’s research focuses on reducing the amount of medication necessary for successful transplantation and finding interventions that repair injury to organs because of preservation. He has also been significantly involved in clinical trial management and facilitation.
 
He is an active member of many national societies, including the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, National Kidney Foundation, Donate Life America, and The Transplantation Society. He is the immediate past president of the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS).
