Red Reflex Eye Assessment
The Retinoblastoma Program at Children’s Wisconsin wants to share some information about an important, potentially life-saving eye exam.
The red reflex assessment is a key part of every well-child visit that helps examine a child's visual development and eye health. This assessment screens for conditions that can impact eyesight in infants and young children.
An abnormal or absent red reflex, leukocoria (a white reflex) or asymmetry between the eyes can be a sign of serious issues. These include cataracts, retinoblastoma, glaucoma, retinal detachment, or significant refractive errors.
Early detection and intervention is key. It can prevent permanent vision loss or even save a child's life.
