Playrooms are available in each unit. They are "safe" rooms for patients where no medical procedures are done. Child life specialists manage the playrooms with the help of volunteers. Different activities are offered for children of all ages. Families are important in helping to keep the playrooms safe and clean. Please remember the following:

  • Playrooms are for patient use only.
  • Children should be supervised by an adult family member when volunteers or child life specialists are not present.
  • Toys should be picked up and placed in the toy bin labeled "Dirty Toys" when children are done playing.
  • Let the volunteer, child life specialist or nurse know if there are toys that need cleaning.

School program

Our school program has three hospital-based teachers and one teacher's aide from the Wauwatosa (Wis.) Public School District. School-aged children who cannot leave their rooms to go to the classroom will get bedside teaching. Hospital teachers work with the children's classroom teachers to be sure lessons are current. Ask your child's nurse if your child needs more information about or support from the school program.

Security Services

Security officers are available 24 hours a day to help patients, families and visitors. Security can be contacted for any personal or hospital security concern. We take responsibility for protecting children very seriously and provide a wide variety of services and information. For your safety, common areas of the hospital are under closed-circuit video surveillance.

Lost and found/security for valuables

If you or your child lose anything while at the hospital, call Security Services at (414) 266-2552. A staff member is on duty 24 hours a day. Items found by hospital staff are brought to Security Services and placed in safe keeping for two weeks. Patients, parents and visitors are strongly encouraged to leave large amounts of cash, jewelry, electronics or other valuables at home. If you must bring valuables to the hospital, please keep them with you at all times. Children's is not responsible for your personal property.

Sibling Care

Sibling Care is available for families with a hospitalized child. Brothers and sisters ages 2-12 may go to Sibling Care. It is located near Admitting off the hospital lobby. Children participate in age-appropriate play activities to help them understand their brother or sisters' health care needs. Children must be checked in and out by the same parent or guardian. Space is limited for safety reasons and there is a 90-minute time limit. For more information, call (414) 266-3908.

Social Work Services

Social workers are available to help you and your family with social, emotional and financial issues related to your child's illness. They may be helpful in referring you to coordinating services. Your child's nurse or care provider can arrange a meeting with a social worker or you may call (414) 266-3465 and ask for a social worker.

Spiritual Care Services

Chaplains are available 24 hours a day to provide spiritual support to patients and their families. At your request, chaplains will contact your priest, minister, rabbi or other spiritual leader regarding your child's hospitalization. Contact Spiritual Care through your child's nurse or by contacting the hospital operator at (414) 266-2000 to page the on-call chaplain. Information about local religious services is available. The nondenominational chapel, located on the first floor of the hospital, is open 24 hours a day.
