Overview

Dr. John Routes serves as the co-Director of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute of Southeast Wisconsin and the Director of the Jeffrey Model Foundation (JMF) Research and Diagnostic Center for Primary Immunodeficiencies at the Medical College of Wisconsin. Dr. Routes received his undergraduate degree at Indiana University, Bloomington (Phi Beta Kappa), Medical Degree at Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis (Alpha Omega Alpha), his training in Internal Medicine at the University of Utah and Fellowship training in Allergy and Clinical Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the University of Colorado and National Jewish Health, where he was a faculty member until 2006 when he assumed his present position at the Medical College. Dr. Routes has served on numerous NIH study sections, including Chairman of the “Opportunities for Collaborative Research at the NIH Clinical Center” study section and is currently a member of the “Investigations in Primary Immunodeficiency” study section and is a voting member of the FDA Immunology Devices and Medical Devices Panels. In 2008, Dr. Routes was the Principal Investigator for the pilot study in Wisconsin that instituted the first statewide newborn screening program for severe combined immunodeficiency. In addition to a research interest in developing high-throughput screening assays adaptable for population-based newborn screening for primary immunodeficiencies, Dr. Routes has a longstanding interest in defining the etiology and optimizing the treatment of the granulomatous and lymphocytic interstitial lung (GLILD), a major complication in patients with common variable immunodeficiency (CVID).
