What is a cochlear implant?
Cochlear implants provide access to sound for some people with hearing loss. It is a device that goes past the damaged sensory cells to stimulate the hearing nerve. It does not work like a hearing aid. People with Cochlear implants do not hear the way most people do. They can hear sounds and understand speech in a different way.How does a cochlear implant work?
A cochlear implant has 4 parts that work together. Some parts are worn outside the body. One part is put inside the body. This is done in surgery.
Outside the body:
- Speech processor: sends a coded signal to the transmitter. This part is worn behind the ear.
- Microphone: picks up sound and sends it to the speech processor as a signal. This is part of the speech processor.
- Transmitter: This is a coil piece that sends the signal across the skin to the implant. You wear on your head.
Inside the body:
- Implant: stimulates the hearing nerve.
- The brain takes in the signal from the hearing nerve as sound
Who can benefit from a cochlear implant?
- Adults and children who do not get enough benefit from hearing aids.
- Children who have support of family and school.
- People and families who understand what to expect.
- People and families who come to the needed follow up visits.
No one is too young or too old to get help from a cochlear implant.
What cochlear implants are used in this program?
At this time, there are three companies that make cochlear implants for children and adults. Each company offers different options for the parts of the implant. It’s important to know that you may not use a part from one company with a part from another company.
