Hearing aid problem solving (1719)

When doing your daily listening checks, you may find that your child’s hearing aid has stopped working. Often, the problem is something you can fix at home. This is a list of common problems and solutions.

Dead (No sound)
Cause Solutions
Hearing aid is not turned on. Turn on the hearing aid.
Battery is weak or dead. Change the battery.
Battery is in the door wrong. Remove and insert battery correctly with flat side up.
Earmold is plugged with wax. Clean earmold with warm water and soap.
There is moisture in tubing. Dry tubing with air blower.
The tubing is twisted or kinked. Untwist tubing. Contact Hearing Aid Hotline if unable to untwist or unkink.
The battery contacts are corroded. Clean battery contacts with dry cloth or contact cleaner.
Sounds cut in and out
Cause Solutions
Battery is weak. Turn on the hearing aid.
There is moisture in tubing. Change the battery.
There is moisture in hearing aid. Remove and insert battery correctly with flat side up.
The battery contacts are corroded. Clean battery contacts with dry cloth or contact cleaner.
Feedback (Whistling)
Cause Solutions
Earmold not properly inserted in ear. Reinsert earmold.
Excessive wax in the ear canal. See physician.
Crack in earmold tubing Contact Hearing Aid Hotline/audiologist

Earmold not fitting correctly Contact Hearing Aid Hotline/audiologist
Not loud enough
Cause Solutions
Battery is weak. Change battery.
Earmold is plugged with wax. Clean earmold.
Change in hearing. Contact Hearing Aid Hotline or audiologist
Distorted (Not clear)
Cause Solutions
Weak battery. Change battery.
Moisture in earmold. Dry tubing with blower.
Microphones are dirty. Use cleaning brush to gently brush out microphones.
Corroded battery contacts. Clean battery contacts with dry cloth and/or contact cleaner.
Instrument may be damaged or defective internally. Contact Hearing Aid Hotline or audiologist.
