Mepitel AG (1508)
Key points below
What is Mepitel Ag and how do I use it?
Mepitel Ag is a soft, silicone dressing used to cover open wounds. There is silver in the dressing that helps prevent infection. It is meant to stay on a clean wound for up to 8 days.
Mepitel Ag has holes in it that allows drainage to pass through it and onto an absorbent outer absorbent dressing. It is placed right on the wound. An outer dressing is put on top of the Mepitel Ag. This outer dressing must be changed once a day until the drainage has decreased. This usually takes 2 to 3 days.
How do I change the outer dressing?
- Wash hands with soap and water. Dry with a clean towel.
- Gently remove the outer dressing down to the Mepitel Ag. You may need to hold a corner of the Mepitel Ag to prevent it from lifting off.
- Check to make sure the Mepitel Ag covers the wound.
- If the Mepitel Ag is covering the wound, place a new piece of the absorbent dressing over the Mepitel Ag, then secure this with rolled gauze.
- If the Mepitel Ag has slipped off the wound, gently lift the Mepitel Ag up at the edges and put it back over the wound. Put a new piece of the outer dressing over it.
- Secure the dressing with gauze.
How often does the dressing need to be changed?
Mepitel Ag can be left on for up to 8 days. Change the outer dressing once a day until there is little drainage. Once there is little or no drainage on the outer dressing, the dressings do not need to be changed until your child is seen by their provider. Leave the entire dressing in place until your child is seen by their provider. If you cannot be seen within 8 days, call your child’s provider.
