Parent – Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) (2212)
What is Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)?
PCIT is a type of mental health treatment that can help young children who struggle with following directions, anger, or meltdowns. It is a proven therapy that works to improve the relationship between a child and their parents or caregiver. With this therapy, the parent or caregiver gets coaching on how to interact with the child in a positive and supportive way. It also teaches the child new skills and behaviors.
What happens at PCIT?
Coaching sessions happen while you and your child are in a playroom. The therapist is in another room. They can watch you play with your child through a one-way mirror. You wear a wireless earpiece, that allows the therapist to coach you as you play with your child.
PCIT is often provided at the clinic. It is very hard to do these visits with a video visit. This therapy often has 12 to 20 sessions. Sessions will be weekly or every other week. This will depend on your needs and goals. Caregiver will take part in all or most of these sessions. Check with your insurance to see if PCIT is covered under your plan.
There are 2 phases of PCIT. What are they?
In phase 1 of PCIT, you will learn new skills to help you and your child feel closer. These skills will help you feel less frustrated.
Your child may:
- feel more secure, safe, and stronger attachment with you.
- have a longer attention span.
- have a higher self-esteem.
- show more pro-social behaviors (sharing, taking turns).
- have less frequent or strong meltdowns. They may also not last as long.
- be less hyperactive.
- have less whining, bossiness or other negative behaviors used to seek attention.
In phase 2 of PCIT, you will apply the skills you have learned. You will be more confident in your skills.
Your child will:
- be more compliant with caregiver requests.
- have less frequent or strong aggressive behaviors. The may also not last as long as they did.
- have less destructive behavior.
- improve their behavior at home and in public.
