What is Wegovy (semaglutide)?
Wegovy is a medicine that helps with weight loss. It is used with a healthy diet and being more active. This medicine helps your child feel less hungry and eat less.
Who can take this medicine?
Children 12 years old and older can use it. Do not use this medicine if:
- someone in your family has or had medullary thyroid cancer
- someone in your family has or had Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia Type 2
- your child
- has or had pancreatitis
- plans to or is trying to get pregnant
- is breastfeeding
How do I take this medicine?
The medicine is given once a week in a shot. The shot goes into the fat under the skin of the belly, thigh, or back of the upper arm. It should be given in a different spot each week. Give it on same day each week. If you forget to give it on the day it was supposed to be given, it is okay to give it the next day.
This medicine comes in a prefilled device called a pen. It has just the right amount of medicine needed for one dose. If the dose is changed, you will need a new prescription.
You will start at the lowest amount of medicine. This is 0.25mg weekly. This helps the body get used to the medicine slowly. The amount of medicine you will give will go up in small amounts every
month, as needed, to lose weight.
Where should I keep this medicine?
- Keep the pens in the refrigerator. The best temperature is from 36 to 46 degrees. Keep them in the package they came in. This protects them from light.
- The pen you will use can be left out of the refrigerator for up to 28 days. Room temperature is 46 to 86 degrees.
Throw away the medicine if it has been:
- exposed to light or temperatures above 86 degrees
- out of the refrigerator for more than 28 days
What should I watch for (side effects)?
- Upset stomach, throwing up, stomach ache
- Trouble pooping (too loose or too hard)
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Feeling tired
What else should I know when taking this medicine?
- Have your child drink water even if they are not thirsty. It can help with an upset stomach.
