Why is it prescribed?
Amicar prevents or treats bleeding in people who have bleeding disorders. It is often used with other types of medicine or blood products to help the blood clot. It also works to keep clots from breaking down. It may be used:
- After major dental procedures.
- After surgery in the mouth or oral cavity such as tonsils, adenoids, or sinuses.
- For heavy periods.
- To treat very severe nosebleeds.
How is it taken?
- Pills or syrup are taken by mouth (oral). Patients who cannot take medicines by mouth can have an IV or injection. It can also be made into a mouthwash.
How and when do I give it?
The hematologist or nurse will explain how and when to use this medicine.
- Do not let anyone else take this medicine.
- Do not stop using this medicine unless the hematologist says it is okay to do so.
What are possible side effects?
Side effects are normally mild and may include:
- Upset stomach. If this happens, take it with food.
- Diarrhea
- Headache
Special information
- Be sure to get refills before the medicine is needed. Most pharmacies do not carry Amicar. They will need to order it which could take several days.
- Amicar can be made into a mouthwash. This is mainly used after dental work. It is gently swished in the mouth for at least 2 minutes. The mouthwash contacts the gums to help prevent bleeding. Do not eat or drink for at least an hour after using it.
- Be sure to give each dose of medicine as the doctor or nurse has instructed.
- Use all the medicine as prescribed. Do not stop using it even if the bleeding stops.
