What is a Nerve conduction velocity (NCV) test?

The nerves in our bodies have electric impulses running through them. The NCV test measures how well the impulses run through the nerves. It helps the doctor see if your child has any nerve damage.

How is the test done?

Your child will lie down on a table. Recording type of electrodes will be put on your child’s arm or leg. Wires from the electrodes will be attached to a machine.
The technologist or doctor will use a small object called a stimulator to touch your child’s skin. Your child will feel a tingle. When this happens, the machine will measure how fast the impulse traveled along the nerve. The NCV test takes about 30 to 40 minutes.

What follow-up care is needed?

No follow-up care is needed.

Test results

A specially trained doctor will review the results of the NCV test with you when it is done. Your child’s doctor will then get a written report of the results within 7 to 10 days.
