Why does my baby need caffeine?
A low dose of caffeine can help premature babies with breathing problems.
This is a prescription medicine. Have the pharmacist show you how to draw up the right dose.
How do I give it?
Give caffeine once each day or as ordered by your doctor. It is best to give it with the first feeding in the morning. Give it by mouth at the same time each day.
1. Carefully measure the ordered dose of caffeine with an oral syringe.
2. Mix the caffeine with 2 teaspoons (10 mL) of breast milk or formula in a bottle. Shake well.
3. Give it at the start of your baby’s feeding. This is to make sure your baby gets all the medicine.
4. Give the rest of the feeding.
What are the possible side effects?
Your baby may:
- Vomit more than normal.
- Be very fussy.
- Have a hard time falling asleep or not be able to sleep.
Important information
- Store it at room temperature.
If you miss a dose:
– Give the missed dose as soon as you think about it.
– If it is close to the time for your baby’s next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your baby’s normal time.
– Do not give 2 doses at once. Do not give extra doses. - If your baby throws up soon after their dose, call the doctor.
- Blood tests will be done to check your baby’s caffeine level. The tests are done to make sure the dose is the right amount for your baby’s size.
- Be sure to reorder the medicine a few days before it is gone.
- Your baby may go home with an apnea monitor.
