Essential oils for aromatherapy (1840)

Key points below

What are essential oils?

Essential oils are taken from plants. They may promote wellness and help with comfort, relaxation, and sleep. They may also be used for stomach upset, nervousness, or tiredness.

Essential oils are offered as one way to help care for your child. They do not replace other medicines. Some children may find them helpful and some may not. You and your child will decide if they want to use essential oils. If your child does not like the essential oil, it will not be used.

Are essential oils safe?

Essential oils are safe when used as instructed. At Children’s, staff will only give your child oils they can breathe in and smell.

When are essential oils not used?

Children that are under 6 months of age or who breastfeeding or are in the neonatal intensive care unit should not have essential oils.

Water based diffusers are not allowed at Children’s. These may spread germs. Do not use diffusers while you are here.

How will my child be given essential oil?

A few drops of the oil(s) will be placed on a cotton ball and brought to your child. Your child breathes in the oil for 5 to 10 breaths. You can ask for more every 2 hours if your child finds it helpful.
