General information on lead testing/poisoning

Health departments across the state have Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention programs.  These programs help teach families. They can tell you where to go to test your child and your home for lead. In the greater Milwaukee area, call (414) 286-2165

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services coordinates your local Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention program. Call them at (608) 266-5817 to get information on lead testing in your town.

Blood lead testing

Blood samples can be tested for lead poisoning. This may be done at your doctor's office. Your local health department or WIC clinic also may be able to take a blood sample.

Air, paint and dust lead testing

Air, paint and dust in and around your home can contain lead. Call the State Lab of Hygiene at 608-224-6210 to get help to have the air, paint or dust tested for lead.

Your local health department may also have testing materials that can be used in your home. There may be a small fee to use this service.

Soil lead testing

The soil around your home can contain lead. It can also be tested. For information, call the University of Wisconsin Soils Lab at the following statewide location:
Madison 608-262-4364

Water lead testing

Lead may also be found in drinking water. If you have questions or you would like to have a sample of your water tested, call your local water supplier.

You can also call your regional Department of Natural Resources (DNR).  Ask them how to send a water sample to a certified laboratory for testing.
