Ingestions (1521)
Key points below
Your child has swallowed or was exposed to: _____________________________________.
How are ingestions treated?
Treatment depends on what your child swallowed or was exposed to. Your child has been treated with:
Charcoal. Charcoal absorbs the substance that was swallowed. If your child was given charcoal, it will turn the stools black. It also may cause diarrhea for several days.
Observation. Your child was checked and watched for signs of poisoning. You are being discharged as no problems developed. If you have questions or are concerned after you get home, call us at 1(800) 222-1222.
How can I keep my child safe?
- Keep household and car products and medicines in locked cabinets. Putting these items out of reach may not be enough to keep your child safe.
- Put plants up high and out of reach.
- Go to www.Wisconsinpoison.org for more information or to order materials.
- Syrup of Ipecac is no longer used to treat poisoning.
- If your child has ingested something once, they are more likely to try it again. Make sure babysitters and grandparents know that they need to watch your child closely.
- Program the number of the Poison Center into your telephone. If anything that may be poisonous has been eaten or breathed in by your child, or spilled on their skin or in the eyes, immediately call:
Wisconsin Poison Center: 1-800-222-1222. Calls are answered 24 hours a day.
