Wheelchair transfer to a car (1086)

Getting ready
- Open the car door.
- Remove the arm rest and foot rest on the side of the wheelchair that is closest to the door.
- Put the wheelchair next to the car seat.
- Lock the wheelchair brakes.
Transferring
Your child should be put in the back seat. If their height and weight allow, they can sit in the front passenger seat. To help your child into the car:
- If your child cannot put weight on either leg. Have another person help you get your child into the car.
- The person helping you should get into the car from the other side.
- Have that person lift your child from around the trunk, under the arms.
- Help get your child into the car by lifting their legs and lowering them into the car.
- Be sure to bend your knees and protect your back.
- If your child can put weight on one leg.
Your child will stand on the strong leg with your help. Have your child turn and sit on the car seat. Help your child scoot back. Help your child move their legs into the car.
- If your child can put some weight on each leg.
Your child may stand on both legs with your help. Have your child turn and sit on the car seat. Help your child move their legs into the car.
Note: A physical therapist will talk to you about any other special things that you need to do.
