What is Aerobika?

Aerobika is a breathing device that helps to move and loosen mucus in the lungs so it can be coughed out. Mucus is the fluid that coats the mouth, throat and lungs.  

How often and when should it be used?

A provider will tell you how often to use the Aerobika.  Usually it is used 2 to 4 times every day.  It takes about 10 to 20 minutes each time. 

How do I use it? 

A provider will teach you how to use the device and set the dial at the right spot. 

1. Check to make sure the device and dial are set correctly.
2. Sit or stand. 
3. Hold the device and put your lips around the mouthpiece.  Get a good seal.
4. Take a deep breath in through the device and hold your breath for 2 to 3 seconds.
5. Breathe out steadily through device, like blowing up a balloon.   
6. Keep your cheeks flat and firm. You may hold your cheeks flat with your fingers. 
7. Repeat steps 3 through 6 for 10-20 breaths.
8. Do 2 to 3 huff coughs to cough out the mucus.  This is the end of 1 cycle
9. Repeat the cycle until treatment is done.

How do I clean the Aerobika device?

The Aerobika may be cleaned after each use or as needed.  Your healthcare provider will tell you how often to do this.
1. Press the tabs on the front and back of the Aerobika to take the device apart. 
2. You should see four parts: the mouthpiece, the top case, the bottom case and the valve cartridge.
3. Wash the 4 parts in dish soap.  Let them soak for 15 minutes.
4. Rinse the parts in warm water. 
5. Shake off water and let air dry on a clean towel.
6. You can clean the Aerobika in the top shelf of the dishwasher. Be sure to use a rinse aide like Jet-Dry®.  This will keep water deposits from coating the parts. 
7. Let the parts air dry.  Then put them back together. 
8. Store in a clean plastic bag.

How do I disinfect the Aerobika device?

Disinfecting your Aerobika will help to keep it free of germs. Ask your provider how often you    need to disinfect the device. 

Always clean the Aerobika first. Follow steps 1 through 7, above.

Note: Do not use bleach to disinfect it. This device must be replaced every 6 months.
