Alarms

For your child’s safety, medical equipment has alarms to let hospital staff know when your child or equipment needs to be checked.

For your child’s safety, no one should shut off alarms or disconnect children from equipment except Children’s staff.

If you have any questions about your child’s equipment or alarms, please let your child’s care provider know right away.

Bathroom

You are welcome to use the bathroom in your child’s room.

DVD play

Each patient room has a DVD player and most rooms have a PlayStation game player.

DVD’s and video games can be checked out from the Daniel M. Soref Family Resource Center next to the hospital lobby.

Video game controllers can be checked out at the Welcome Center in the Hospital lobby.

Electrical items from home

Equipment that heats up — like curling irons, flat irons and hair dryers — is not allowed.

For your child’s protection, all patient care areas have tamper-resistant outlets. These outlets do not need caps or covers to be safe.

In-room safe

To lock the safe

• The safe door will be open
• Close the door
• Enter any four numbers (xxxx) and
• Press the “LOCK” (#) key
• The word Closed will appear

To open the safe

• Enter your four numbers (xxxx)
• The safe will open

Isolation

Isolation precautions help to stop the spread of germs. A sign on the wall outside the room tells you about the precautions. You can ask your child’s care provider for an information sheet. Most patients with isolation precautions will need to stay in their rooms. Depending on how the germ is spread, you may have to wear protective clothing like a gown or gloves. The protective clothes must be taken off before you come out of the room. You must also wash your hands after leaving the patient’s room.

Kitchen

Each patient care unit has a family kitchen with a microwave, sink and refrigerator. Family food must be labeled with a date and patient name. Ask your child’s nurse for labels.

Laundry

Each patient care unit has a washer and dryer for families to use. Ask your child’s nurse.

Nurse call system/emergency cords

Each patient room and bathroom has a call cord. Pulling this cord will let the patient care staff know your child needs help.

Phone calls

Access a list of helpful phone numbers at Children's. You may use patient or in-house phones. To call someone, dial 9 before the number. Long-distance calls can be made using a calling card. If you hear a message that the telephone has been restricted, dial 0 and ask the hospital operator for help.

Room assignments

Rooms are assigned based on your child’s medical condition and the type of care needed. Sometimes we may need to move your child to another room. Every effort will be made to tell you about the move before it takes place. We ask for your understanding. Your child’s care provider will tell you why the move is needed.

Telephone

All patient rooms have a direct telephone line. Local calls are free.

This phone will not ring between 9 p.m. and 7 a.m., however, you may dial out at any time.

To reach your child’s room after hours, dial the Children’s patient information number at (414) 266-2002 and ask for your child’s room.
