General pediatric cardiology

Children are referred to pediatric cardiologists at the Herma Heart Institute for many reasons, including heart murmurs, chest pain, irregular heartbeats and syncope (or fainting). While this understandably raises concern for parents, a referral to one of our experts does not necessarily mean your child has a serious heart condition. Often, our physicians are able to reassure parents that their child's condition is minor or needs no follow-up treatment.

Nationally recognized care for cardiology conditions both common and complex

Parents find peace of mind at the Herma Heart Institute as they know their child's condition is being assessed by leaders with one of the nation's top pediatric heart programs. Our team of caregivers is made up entirely of specialists in caring for kids and their hearts. From the waiting room to the exam room to diagnostic and treatment areas, we cater to children to help them feel more comfortable and at ease. We're trained to understand the differences between heart care in children and adults, taking into account their size and the potential congenital challenges they may face. Plus, we offer families ready access to the most advanced diagnostic tests, technology and specialty programs needed to treat pediatric heart and related conditions of all kinds.

What to expect during your visit

Depending on your child's need, the initial clinic visit with a Herma Heart Institute cardiologist may last from 30 to 60 minutes. A cardiac nurse will help with the examination, asking questions and recording your child's height, weight, heart rate, blood pressure and other important factors. At that point, we will decide whether additional diagnostic tests are needed. The most common tests are EKGs, chest X-rays and echocardiograms.

When your visit is complete, your cardiologist will share preliminary insights and recommendations for follow-up. If additional testing or care is required, we will work with you to schedule future appointments before you leave. We'll send a full report of the visit and findings and plans to your child's pediatrician to keep him or her in the communication loop. If questions come up after your visit, feel free to contact us. Request an appointment at one of our clinics here.
