Interventional radiology

Interventional radiology is a sub-specialty of imaging that uses image guidance techniques to perform minimally invasive procedures, which often removes or lessens the need for surgery. Image-guided therapy treats conditions inside the body from outside the body, by using imaging techniques (i.e. CT scanners, ultrasound scanners) to insert small instruments or tools, such as catheters or wires. The images provide a road map that allows the interventional radiologist to guide these instruments.

Sometimes these techniques can be used instead of surgery. X-rays and other imaging tests, like ultrasound, can help doctors see inside the body. When small tools, such as tubes and wires, are used with imaging exams, some conditions can be treated with minimally invasive surgery. It may take only a few small cuts to reach areas inside the body that need treatment or repair. Often, no cuts are needed at all. That can mean a shorter stay in the hospital and faster recovery.

The interventional radiology clinic

The interventional radiology clinic is where you or your child will meet the interventional radiologist and discuss your situation in detail. Care is provided in the clinic before and after your procedure. Depending on your needs, your child's images are reviewed, your child will be examined or will have an ultrasound performed, all in one visit. You also can discuss and arrange treatment at this time.
