Physical Therapy

The Integrated Healing Program physical therapists work with teens, who have been struggling with chronic pain and a variety of mental health diagnoses, to help them improve their level of function and return to their academic, social and family activities. Patients will gain strength, endurance and stability, as well as a deep knowledge of the physiology behind pain, how it is affecting their brains and bodies and how they can take steps to return to the things they love doing.

Physical therapy will include portions of exercise in a fun, motivational and relaxed setting where patients can achieve levels of physical activity they may not have thought possible before entering the program. Physical therapy is not limited to exercise; large portions of the physical therapy curriculum is dedicated to relaxation, stress relief, education and pain management, addressing the patient’s wellness as a whole.

Our physical therapists collaborate closely with the medical, mental and behavioral health teams. Treatment plans are developed based on the mutually-agreed upon goals of the patient, parents and Integrated Healing Program teams.

Here are some things to expect in physical therapy:

  • Daily one-on-one physical therapy with exercise, activities and education to fit the specific needs and goals of each patient
  • Therapeutic exercise targeting mobility, stability, flexibility, and strength improvements to allow for return to sports, social activities and school.
  • Sport/activity specific rehabilitation for patients wishing to return to their preferred sport or activity.
  • Relaxation strategies and stress mitigation practice.
  • Comprehensive education in the following areas: pain neuroscience, stress relief, exercise physiology, joint stability, neuroanatomy, eating for wellness, pain reduction strategies.
  • Daily group physical therapy sessions, ranging from group oriented cooperative physical activities to guided relaxation developed to create positive and motivational social interaction.
  • Guidance for reducing reliance on medical equipment and aides, when appropriate.
