Cooling calculator  for newborns affected by hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy

Children's Wisconsin is pleased to offer the Neonatal Encephalopathy Cooling Guidelines (NECG) tool to help identify patients at risk for neonatal encephalopathy. It incorporates the numerous criteria that must be met in order for a patient to meet current guidelines for therapeutic hypothermia treatment. The calculator is offered free of charge to our colleagues worldwide.

The NECG tool is meant only to apply the guidelines related to therapeutic hypothermia treatment and is not a substitute for your best clinical judgement.

Please note: The calculator works best using either the Chrome or Firefox browser.

When assessing infants with possible neonatal encephalopathy, time is critical. Neonatal intensive care doctors at the Children’s are available 24 hours a day to provide medical consultations. Please contact us through the Children's Transport Line for further assistance.

Children's Transport serves Wisconsin, northern Illinois and the upper peninsula of Michigan. The team also travels across the U.S. bringing patients to Children's.

Pediatrics specialists are available for consultation or assistance in the transfer process.

If a referring physician only needs to talk to a pediatric specialist, that can be done while the physician waits on the line. If a decision is made to transport a child, call center staff will mobilize the Transport Team.
