Transplant fellowships at Children's

The Medical College of Wisconsin has many ACGME accredited programs including fellowships in pediatric cardiology, pediatric gastroenterology and pediatric nephrology. The American Society of Transplant Surgeons has just approved a fellowship training in kidney transplantation. Our program also offers training and experience in liver surgery and transplantation, pancreas transplantation and vascular access. 

Continuing medical education at Children's

Children's hosts Best Practices in Pediatrics CME conferences including on-demand, archived webcasts of Practical Pediatrics Grand Rounds, Grand Rounds events and Grand Rounds videos. We also participate in additional conference and training programs and publish our online newsletter, Pediatric Rounds. Children's also takes part in an annual Transplantation Research Retreat that is a joint effort with Froedtert, MCW and the Blood Center of Wisconsin.

Quality of care is of the utmost importance to our multidisciplinary transplant teams. Our teams employ a strong collaborative approach to managing our patients. Quality care is dependent on trained clinicians who are knowledgeable about pediatric diseases, treatments and the unique anatomy and physiology of our population.

Other clinical accomplishments have included:

• First living donor liver transplant in Wisconsin
• First pediatric simultaneous heart and liver transplant in Wisconsin
• First pediatric in situ split liver transplant
• One of the lowest wait times in the nation for a first time kidney transplant
• Performed 12 ABO Incompatible Pediatric Heart Transplants
• Coined the term "Virtual Crossmatch" and pioneered its use for sensitized heart transplant candidates
• Over the past 5 years – nearly 25% of children were bridged to heart transplant using mechanical circulatory support
  • Successfully used Excor Berlin Heart, Thoratec PVAD, Heartmate II, Heartware HVAD, Syncardia Total Artificial Heart, ECMO and Rotaflow support
• One of the first Pediatric Home Ventricular Assistance Device (VAD) programs in the Midwest
• In 2012, ranked as the fourth largest pediatric heart transplant program in the US by volume out of more than 50 programs
• Performed the 9th successful pediatric heart-liver transplant in the United States in 2012
