Urinary incontinence

Urinary incontinence is a common problem in children. It can be emotionally and socially devastating to children and families. It is compounded by major financial costs to the family. Children may have some of the following symptoms:

  • Daytime wetting
  • Nighttime wetting
  • Urinating too often
  • Not urinating often enough
  • Wiggling, dancing, squatting or holding themselves before going to the bathroom
  • Sudden, unexpected urges to urinate
  • Multiple urinary tract infections

Addressing patients' physical and emotional needs

We help children and teens with bladder control difficulties. Care includes:

  • Helping children and teens improve their self-esteem by helping them deal with the anxiety, embarrassment and stress this problem often causes
  • Providing a comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis and treatment of children and teens with daytime and nighttime wetting or other urinary problems
  • Ruling out medical problems that may contribute to bladder control problems
  • Educating families, children and teens about their condition and helping them choose a plan that fits their needs

We give kids the "VIP treatment"

The Voiding Improvement Program (VIP) staff use a sensitive approach, along with today's knowledge and technology, to evaluate and treat children with voiding disorders. They will compile a detailed medical history and perform a physical exam, and may use diagnostic testing, if necessary.

We tailor treatment options to fit each child's needs. These may include on or more of the following:

  • Treatment of associated constipation and/or urinary tract infections
  • Behavior modification tools, such as:
    • Enuresis alarm for bed-wetting
    • Structured voiding schedule
    • Biofeedback training
  • Medications
  • Long-term follow-up and support
