What Do You Need To Do?

  • Use the tables below to know what foods and drinks are best for you during Phase 2.
  • Do not eat more than the amounts listed below in a single day.
  • If the food does not list an amount, you can eat as much as you would like.
  • Formula can help meet your nutrition needs.
  • Your dietitian will work with you to find the best balance of foods and formula.

Phase 2:

Recommended food: Food you should try to eat every day.

  • Proteins
    • 5 ounces or more of fresh chicken breast per day
    • 2 eggs per day
  • Grains and starchy vegetables
    • 2 fresh potatoes per day (peeled, cooked, cooled to room temperature, then refrigerated until chilled through before eating)
  • Fruits
    • 2 bananas per day
    • 1 apple per day (no peel or skin)

Allowed food and drinks: Food and drinks you can eat if you want to.

  • Proteins
    • 3.5-5 ounces of fresh lean white fish once a week, in place of chicken
    • 1 can of tuna, packed in olive or canola oil, once a week
    • 0 ounces of red meat is recommended. If you need to eat red meat, limit to no more than 7 ounces of fresh unprocessed lean beef steak once a week
  • Grains and starchy vegetables
    • White rice
    • Rice noodles without preservatives
    • Rice flour for baking
    • Quinoa
    • 1 slice of bread per day (homemade is best)
    • ½ sweet potato per day
    • ½ cup of cooked lentils, peas, chickpeas, or beans per day
    • ½ cup of dry oatmeal once a week
  • Fruits
    • 1 avocado per day (no more than ½ an avocado per meal)
    • 5 ripe strawberries per day
    • 10 blueberries can replace the strawberries
    • 1 slice melon per day
    • 1 pear, peach or kiwi per day
    • Starting at Week 10, add other fruit in small amounts
      • Start with ½ cup of mango, pineapple or orange slices
      • Do not eat fruit on the “Not Allowed” list.
  • Vegetables
    • 2 tomatoes (or 6 cherry tomatoes) per day
    • 2 cucumbers per day (peeled)
    • 1 carrot per day
    • 1 cup fresh spinach leaves (uncooked) per day
    • 3 lettuce leaves (once a day)
    • 1 large or 2 small zucchini, 4 to 6 fresh mushrooms, 2 broccoli or cauliflower florets (Do not eat all at the same time)
    • Starting at Week 10, add other vegetables in small amounts.
      • Do not eat vegetables on the “Not Allowed” list.
  • Condiments
    • Oils: olive or canola
    • Spices: salt, pepper, paprika, cinnamon, cumin, turmeric
    • Fresh herbs: mint, oregano, coriander, rosemary, sage, basil, thyme, dill, parsley
    • Seasoning: onions (all types), garlic, ginger, fresh lemon juice
    • Sweeteners: honey (up to 3 Tablespoons (Tbs) per day), table sugar (up to 3 teaspoons (tsp) per day)
    • Baking soda or baking powder
  • Nuts
    • 6 to 8 almonds or walnuts (unsalted, unroasted, unprocessed) per day
    • 2 Tablespoons raw tahini (with no additives)
  • Drinks
    • Water
    • Sparkling water
    • Herbal teas (slice of lemon, lime, orange, or mint leaves may be added for taste)
    • 1 glass freshly squeezed orange juice per day
    • Chamomile tea

Not allowed food and drinks: Food and drinks you should not eat.

  • Proteins
    • Meats and fish that are processed, precooked, or smoked
    • Seafood
    • Red meat, pork, turkey, other parts of the chicken
    • Soy products
    • Dairy products
    • Ice cream
    • Non-dairy milk beverages
    • All other types of nuts
  • Grains and starchy vegetables
    • Wheat products including breakfast cereals, bread, and baked goods of any kind
    • Baker’s yeast
    • Gluten-free products not listed in allowed foods
    • Soy products
    • Frozen potatoes
    • All other flours
  • Fruits
    • Dried fruits
    • Persimmon
    • Pomegranate
    • Cactus fruit
    • Passion fruit
  • Vegetables
    • Frozen vegetables
    • Kale
    • Leeks
    • Asparagus
