APP spotlight: Michele K. Brown, MSN, RN, CPNP-BC
Michele K. Brown, MSN, RN, CPNP-BC, is a pediatric nurse practitioner (NP) and headache specialist at the Children’s Wisconsin Jane B. Pettit Pain and Headache Center with 29 years of experience in pediatric health care, including 17 as a nurse practitioner. She works alongside a team of specialists, including three anesthesiologists, three other NPs, two nurses and four psychologists.
“As a pediatric nurse practitioner, I take a holistic approach, taking the child in as a whole person,” said Brown, who evaluates and treats her patients’ headaches, migraines or other head pain.
She cares for patients autonomously and draws on the expertise of her colleagues when appropriate. For instance, she often works collaboratively with the psychologists at the Jane B. Pettit Pain and Headache Center because of the close link between mental health and head pain.
Background
Brown started her medical career in 1994 as a pediatric nurse and spent two years in the intermediate intensive care unit at Children’s Wisconsin. She then spent 14 years serving in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps. She was one of only two candidates selected for an Air Force Institute of Technology program, where she earned her graduate degree and certification as an NP in 2006.
In 2017, she returned to Children’s Wisconsin, bringing the expertise she developed from decades of providing specialized pediatric care to the Jane B. Pettit Pain and Headache Center.
Guiding Student NP's
Brown volunteers as a preceptor for student NPs in various pediatric specialties, including primary care, acute care, psychiatry and psychology. In this role, she supervises and guides students, helping them develop practical and real-world clinical skills.
Staying on top of the latest developments in evidence-based care is important to Brown. Between literature searches and discussions with other NPs to gain and share knowledge and resources, she embraces the learning opportunities that every new day brings to provide her patients with the expert care they deserve.
