To support collaborative care, Children’s Wisconsin has developed guidelines to provide protocols for jointly managing patient cases between community providers and our pediatric specialists.
Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) refers to a congenital condition of abnormal hip development and instability in infants and young children. This condition can range from mild instability to dislocation. Early identification allows for earlier, less invasive treatment with better outcomes. Infantile DDH is often a silent condition, early screening is important. A DDH guideline with algorithms has been developed to aid referring providers to identify children who need treatment with the goal to minimize unnecessary imaging and prevent delayed specialty evaluation.

To refer a patient:
- In Children's EPIC (ECL users) – place Ambulatory Referral to Orthopedics and place an order Screening Ultrasound
- Community Provider using EPIC: Place an external referral to CHW ORTHOPEDIC CLINICS & SPORT MEDICINE CLINICS and an order for Screening Ultrasound
- Fax to Central Scheduling at (414) 607-5288 with a referral Screening Ultrasound
- Online ambulatory referral form with a referral to Screening Ultrasound
IF screening ultrasound is done somewhere other than Children's Wisconsin, please ensure it is a hip ultrasound with manipulation.
