Your provider will make an asthma management plan for you. This plan will help you know what to do when your asthma is in control and when your asthma symptoms get worse. Learn how an asthma plan works and why it is needed.

What Is an Asthma Management Plan?
It is a plan to help you know what to do when your asthma is in control or when you have asthma symptoms.
An Asthma Management Plan Will Help You Know:
- What medicines are needed every day.
- Early signs of an asthma problem.
- What to do when asthma symptoms start.
- What to do when asthma symptoms get worse.
- When to call the provider.
The Asthma team will make an Asthma Management Plan for you. The plan is important to share with school and daycare providers.
An Asthma Management Plan Is Split Into 3 Colored Zones:
- Green
- Yellow
- Red

Green:
Means “Go”. Asthma is in good control and there are no asthma symptoms.
Follow these steps:
- Take daily control medicine if it is on your plan. Take it even if there are no asthma symptoms.
- Take rescue medicine 15 minutes before exercise or sports if needed.
Yellow:
Means asthma symptoms are starting. Symptoms may be coughing, runny nose, wheezing or chest tightness.
Follow these steps:
- Start quick relief medicine right away to keep symptoms from getting worse.
- Continue to take the Green zone daily control medicines.
- Call your provider if your are in the Yellow zone for more than 24 hours.
- Follow any special instructions given by your provider.
Red:
Means danger. It has become very hard to breathe. Take immediate action.
Follow these steps:
- Increase the quick relief medicine as instructed in the plan. Call your provider right away.
- If your provider cannot be reached go to Urgent Care, Emergency Department or call 9-11 right away.
