Children’s Wisconsin Is Expanding Access to Pediatric Surgical Services in Northeast Wisconsin

David Gourlay, MD, Surgeon-in-Chief 3 minute read

Children’s Wisconsin is proud to partner with Bellin Health to enhance pediatric surgical access and expertise in Northeast Wisconsin.

In January, Children’s Wisconsin surgeons and anesthesiologists started performing certain surgeries and procedures at Bellin Hospital in Green Bay. Working in partnership with pediatric-trained anesthesiologists, nurses and technicians from Bellin Health, the arrangement allows us to serve more kids and families, closer to home.

Connected for Kids logoTo start, we are treating umbilical hernias, removal of cysts/basic masses, epigastric hernias, circumcisions, orchiopexies, meatotomies. Later this year, we will expand to ear, nose and throat procedures such as ear tubes, frenotomies, small lesion removal and cauterization for nosebleeds. Orthopedic surgeries will begin this summer.

We are eager to support the increasing number of families in Northeast Wisconsin who are choosing to have their kids treated by Children’s Wisconsin experts. Every year, Children’s Wisconsin supports approximately 50,000 visits from kids who live in Northeast and Central Wisconsin, as well as the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Kids who previously needed to travel to a Children’s Wisconsin location in Southeast Wisconsin for certain surgeries and procedures will now be able to receive treatment closer to home.

Increasing access to pediatric surgical care is an example of how our Connected for Kids partnership is improving the health and well-being of children and adolescents living in Northeast Wisconsin.

In December 2021, we announced our partnership in Connected for Kids, which brought together the three main health care organizations in the region — Children’s Wisconsin, Bellin Health and ThedaCare — to help improve the health and well-being of children and teens in Northeast and Central Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. In additional to enabling Children’s Wisconsin to bring additional pediatric services and specialists to the region, the partnership has also helped Children’s Wisconsin deliver better and more efficient care to patients from Bellin Health and ThedaCare through seamless coordination across each organization.

These surgical services are just the latest in our continued commitment to bring care closer to home.

Our Children’s Wisconsin Fox Valley Hospital, located within the ThedaCare Regional Medical Center-Neenah, has been around for more than 20 years. This hospital provides a level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and additional pediatric inpatient care.

In March 2023, Children’s Wisconsin opened a new 50,000-square-foot clinic in Appleton. Opening our Appleton Clinic increased access to several pediatric specialty care services in the region and is another key component to our partnership in Connected for Kids. Looking ahead, urgent care services will be added to our Appleton Clinic in late 2025.

Children’s Wisconsin also has three child advocacy centers in the region. The Fox Valley, Green Bay and North Central Wisconsin Child Advocacy Centers care for kids who have experienced abuse or neglect.

Lastly, in August, we will open our new Children’s Wisconsin Ashwaubenon Clinic near Green Bay. This is another key component to our Connected for Kids partnership because our clinic will be located in the same building as the new Bellin Health Children & Adolescent Center in Ashwaubenon. This new location will be the home for some of Bellin Health’s pediatric primary care and psychiatric services, with specialty care services provided by both Children’s Wisconsin and Bellin Health experts.

We are thrilled to be able to offer these services and continue to strengthen our investment in the kids and families of Northeast Wisconsin. And through our partnership with Bellin Health and ThedaCare, we will continue to offer more comprehensive care for kids close to home.
