My son gets it

Charonne Ganiere, Licensed foster parent

Recently, I found Kid Hero and foster care buttons on my son’s backpack. Unknown to me he found them in a package we received for referring new foster parents. It brought tears to my eyes to find these buttons on the backpack of my 9-year-old boy.

Today, he came running through the front door smiling ear to ear. He could not wait to tell me about the kids and teachers who asked about his buttons. He told them about our involvement in foster care, how he loves his foster siblings and being a brother to so many kids!

To say I am proud of my son would be an understatement. Every day I see what a great brother he is, and he equally loves every child who comes to our home. He gives them piggyback rides, plays peek-a-boo and has been found having a tea party with one of our little ones. I know he loves these kids, and he is so proud about what we do in foster care. That he would gladly display it for all to see, tells me he gets it. He knows that we are changing lives; a realization and an experience that I know in turn will leave him forever changed.

At any given time, as many as 7,000 children are in foster care in Wisconsin. As the largest provider of foster care programming in the state, Children’s Wisconsin offers high levels of support to foster and adoptive families.  View more articles from Charonne Ganiere
