Connection to standards
The designers of Children’s Wisconsin (Children’s) e-learning content have aligned elements of lessons and activities with SHAPE America’s National Health Education Standards. The National Health Education Standards are listed below. Lessons and activities also align with certain Wisconsin Standards for Health Education (WSHE).
Children’s recognizes the importance of helping students learn to manage emotions, focus attention, respect self and others, make responsible choices and engage with their community. Therefore, efforts were also made to align elements of the lessons and activities with the American School Counselor Association Student Standards: Mindsets & Behaviors for Student Success and the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction’s Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies.
National Health Education Standards
- Standard 1: Use functional health information to support health and well-being of self and others.
- Standard 2: Analyze influences that affect health and well-being of self and others.
- Standard 3: Access valid and reliable resources to support health and well-being of self and others.
- Standard 4: Use interpersonal communication skills to support health and well-being of self and others.
- Standard 5: Use a decision-making process to support health and well-being of self and others.
- Standard 6: Use a goal-setting process to support health and well-being of self and others.
- Standard 7: Demonstrate practices and behaviors to support health and well-being of self and others.
- Standard 8: Advocate to promote health and well-being of self and others.
Health literacy
The following definition of health literacy was the foundation for SHAPE America's guidance document: Appropriate Practices in School-Based Health Education.
Health literacy - the capacity of an individual to obtain, interpret and understand basic health information and services and the competence to use such information and services in ways that enhance health
The goal of health education is to provide students with the knowledge and skills needed to lead healthy lifestyles. A skills-based approach is a best practice for delivering high quality health education.
Health literacy is an important measure of the effectiveness of health education and is critical to ensuring that students have the ability to be healthy throughout their lives.
Health literacy helps people address their own health needs along with the needs of others. They are able to learn and use knowledge and skills to improve their own health and the health of others. This is helpful now and in the future as their health needs change throughout their lives. A health literate person is:
- A critical thinker and problem solver
- A responsible and productive citizen
- A self-directed learner
- An effective communicator
